Some Volcano Action

Woohoo, it's Style Imitates Art Time!  And here's the inspiration:
South Wind Clear Sky by Katsushika Hokusai

And my interpretation:
Me and Volcano on Fairly Nice Day

I just love these things! To get a better idea of what I'm actually wearing and where it came from see the pic after the break.

Me looking uninteresting without a backdrop
Nevertheless, here's the scoop:  the vest was made prior to Project Mimina out of scrap fabric. The kimono top with skirt was made-from-scratch using a pattern originally, that was tweaked by me.  Later the top and skirt were refashioned to fit.  The ribbon pin was made from bits & bobs, the stockings cut from ill fitting tights, and the shoes hand-painted by moi. (If you click on the bold words you'll get to the post about that particular item.)

I'll be linking up with Style Imitates Art, so check out what others came up with after Monday.  And come see the Visibles at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style along with the Monday Mingle crowd.

    1. Hokusai is brilliant, he's the one who did the famous wave woodblock print you always see reproduced. Glad you liked my rendition, Wendy.

    1. It's so much fun doing these Style Imitates Art things. They're not competitions though, they're for inspiration in stylin' yo clothes. And I tell you, it makes me put together things I wouldn't have dreamed of doing otherwise. My true love even gets into it. He offered me his bright red T-shirt today in case I needed it (ha ha). What a sweetie-pie. Anyway, talk about being creative, Joni - look at what you put together today!!

  3. That's so cool how your umbrella is an extension of the sky. Brilliant life-into-art, art-into-life. The copper oxidation on the shoes - wow. It's like you threw away the rules and just did the best thing.

    1. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the umbrella was from MOMA and a gift. But it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the print (other than Georgia O'Keefe's cloud painting). Oh, I'm so glad you actually follow the links to find out more, Melanie, pleased as punch, I am.

Talk about throwing away the rules...can't wait to get over and see what you've orchestrated for today!

  4. Your interpretation is genius and I can see how the Style Imitates Arts challenges can be a great way to combine items you wouldn't have thought to normally. I'd love to take the challenge, but I'm dressing out of a suitcase for the next few weeks, so it would be even more of a challenge :)
Sorry, I meant to get back to you about the spats pattern. They have a zipper closure and an elastic that goes under the sole of a shoe. I bought my pattern on Etsy and I see them still available online from time to time.

    1. I hope you do take up the Style Imitates Art challenge when you can, it's a blast! Ah, the spats...your description helps. I could probably pull it off from that or at least give it a go. Thanks for the info!

  6. Oh Pao, I've been back to today's post four times today and still can't come up with the right words that do justice to your utter fabulousness. Gorgeous art and utterly amazing interpretation from the brolly down to the shoes. I'm too late to play this time but I must try and get my act together for the next challenge. xxx
PS Your earrings from the 1960s and a bean bag pattern? My head's spinning (and I still haven't started on the booze!)

Yes, one can only image the magnificence of your styling for art! Actually, they've extended the deadline until Monday afternoon, so....

I'd love to send them to you as I don't wear earrings anymore and would you really want a bean bag chair pattern?? Email your address and we'll get it done.

    1. Hey Bella, cool to see you here! I wasn't the one who chose the image, but I do love it for sure. I haven't told you yet how much I enjoyed the post you published on Megan's interview with Terri. It was perfect timing since we all missed Terri's regular blogging so much. Thanks for being so thoughtful all around.

  14. Pao, your outfit was by far the best! I have a weakness for all things Asian, and Asian fabric is right at the top of my list! This outfit is just brilliant - the colours, pattern, the scroll shaped brooch, even your hair cut! And of course that amazing umbrella! Fantastic!

    1. I loved all those amazing interpretations - none of which I would have thought of myself - that's what I like about it so much. I admire all things Asian too. Can't help it. I'm still thinking about that dress you wore over your tutu and I how I might recreate that shape...

  15. I want to hang photos of you on my wall. You're just as lovely art as the original, maybe more so, because, I, like, know you...lol.

    1. I think Hokusai's volcano and I make a pretty good picture myself. Even though it is shameful to take a master's artwork and crudely superimpose myself upon it without permission! But I'm not doing it to make money, does that count?
