A Cool Blue Tablecloth Dress

for the last day of MeMadeMay'18
~ Am I Right? ~

It's funny how time changes things.  When I first made this, I wore it differently.   You can see how here, way back in 2014.  And now because of MMM, I'm liking it more in this relaxed, funky, layered-look way.

~ and here you can see it really was a tablecloth ~

And very simply made at that.  I just added thin navy bias tape to bind the neckline and sleeve edges.  The dress hem is the hemmed edges of the tablecloth.  There were some stains that I covered with appliques.  Like the two gray leaf forms at the center bottom.  They're actually cut out from other fabric and zig-zagged on.

~ this is the buttoned-up look ~

I added a matching button in the middle of the design and two buttonholes on either end of the fabric "wings" so I could fold them over, as you can see.  Those three little flowers on the white border were sewn on to cover more stains.

The blue lace pantaloons were self-drafted.  Piece of cake.

~ and cool blue platform sandals from ebay ~

I will be wrapping up my MMM'18 experience in the next post and comparing this year with last year.  Both had surprises for me.
And thank you all for your comments of support.  It really makes a difference.  Especially since I don't do any of the other social media.  mmwwaaa!

  3. Your wardrobe is amazing, but your shoe collection has me green with envy! You have the modern flapper look on lock (as the kids say--or used to say, anyway, because who knows what they're saying by now)!

    1. What can I say? I luv to sew and I troll ebay shoes to relax (and them some). And now I know what style niche I'm in. Modern Flapper, hmmm.

  4. I remember discussing that amazing tablecloth dress with Krista (who sadly doesn't blog any more) during a Skype chat back in 2014. I still love it (and those wedges!) xxx

  5. This is so beautiful. I've loved all your MMMs but this one strikes because it looks so cool – in whatever way you want to take that! Temperature-wise for sure. I just feel a whole lot of degrees cooler looking at it. Gorgeous.

    1. Hey Barbara's on my blog! It must've done the trick. It's gone from the suffocating 90s to the cool 50s in one day.

    1. And that's one of the things I set off to do when I started Project Minima. Figure out what my style was. Funny how that works. Especially as I "teach" art and always say to the students your style is always there, you can't force it or make it happen. You just have to get out of the way and let it evolve. And, yes I knew that, but it is a process and you do have to pay attention and be true to yourself. nuff said.
      Thanks, Louisa, for being there.

  8. I love the button placement. I was thinking you would have a button hanging on the edge when you opened it. But this is way better!
I adore simple makes and versatile items, so this is going on my list for sure. Now just need to find a funky tablecloth!
You know I love sheer pantaloons.

    1. Hi Tess, Yes, that's where I found out about the id info, etc. But they don't mention anything about how they've discontinued sending out email notifications when anyone comments or how to get that going again.

Thanks anyway. If you hear anything else...

  11. Can I borrow this outfit for a while? Our weather has turned scorchingly hot, and I'm running out of things to wear. I am so enamoured with this dress and the way you added the side panels that button together in the middle. How do you self-draft your pantaloons?

    1. Same here, weather-wise. Looking at the 2nd picture, if you can visualize it with my arms straight out, it's a rectangular tablecloth folded in half with my head sticking out the middle. You can see how the sleeves end at the lighter blue border...and how they run straight across the fold line on either side of the neck hole. Other than that, I just scooped out what wasn't going to be the dress - i.e., under the arms along the torso and back out for the skirt. To do that, you can fold the cloth in half again, this time width-wise so you only have to make the cut once and it's exactly the same on both sides. Then you just sew up the 2 side seams. That's it. Except for seam binding the sleeve edges and the neck hole. Try it with a rectangular piece of paper first.

As far as pantaloons go, you could trace off a pair of pants you already have, or Tina Givens offers some free patterns on her site you could use as a basis. Email me if you want more specifics. and have fun!
