Flannel Shirts: Better Than Ever

~ song by leGoodLum ~

I'm on a new kick.  From recycled tablecloth dresses to rehabbed flannel shirts.  This is my second one.  The first one hasn't been photo'd yet.  I love flannel shirts, always have, but the problem is they just aren't very cool to wear anymore, now are they?  Well, wait until you see my new Flannelstein top!

a yellow plaid flannel shirt I had

with a silk brocade curtain given to me by a friend

a leather bow with buckle from old sandals

scraps from my op-art stockings for collar, pocket flaps & center closure

It took a week to figure it out & put together.  Things you can't see very well in my blurry pix are the skirt pockets that came from the sleeves of another dress I made and the ruffled cuffs.  They were the border trim from an African print tablecloth-turned-dress.  You can see all the details clearly and up close on my Clothes for Fall page.

I'm wearing the Flannelstein top with an ombre gray to black dotted skirt (fabric given to me by a friend), gray & black houndstooth tights (given new in a swap), and my black leather/gray suede XOXO boot/shoes from e-bay.

Oh, here's some shoe shots...
looking down

looking askance

and sideways.

With that I'm ready to join the Visibles at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style and Shelia's Shoe Shine.  Then, tomorrow I'll be at Rhonda's Me Made Monday and Sacramento's Share-in-Style: Shoes.  Hope to see you all there!

  1. First, the shoes/boots are amazing. Second, let's hear it for a re-made flannel shirt - this is a wonderfully cool pao-esque outfit! Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, xo.

    1. ooo, ooo, you should see how it moves when I walk. I feel like Mick Jagger or something. (in my dreams, I know.) Thanks for letting me hang out with the Visibles, Patti.

  2. OMG, cascading plaid flannel! Can't get anymore neo-hipster then that!

I love the feel of flannel shirts but can't even think if I've actually owned my own. I think if I were to refashion a comfort clothing item it would be sweatshirts. And NOT with appliqued kittens mind you. ;)
You've given me an idea to restyle a sweatshirt by cutting off the sleeves at elbow length and cuffing. Cutting up the middle to make a jacket, then adding a peplum to the bottom. hmmm

    2. Oh my, I do own several that I'm refashioning now. And several more that have been donated to me. Sweatshirts not so much. I might have two...But can't wait to see what you do to them, Joni.

Yeah, it was so funny finding a song titled Flannel Shirts. Too bad the artwork wasn't credited...

  6. I was just coveting flannel and informed my son I was taking one of his flannel shirts. So yeah, I look like a lumberjack hausfrau, but at least I'm warm and cosy.
I hope you are on a roll with flannel rehabbing, this is fantastic! And the boots! I always wonder how to do floaty layers for cold weather and you've succeeded.

    1. Flannel coveting, yes. But now you can flannel convert! I am definitely on a roll. 3 conversions with more on the way. Flannel shirts are the new winter tablecloth dresses. Something like that.

    1. I feel like these are flannel fairy dresses/ outfits I've been conjuring up. I've finished the 3rd one already. Just like playing dress-up, only now I can sew them myself.

    1. Tartan makes it sound so serious. Plaid is playful, silly even.

  9. Completely charming! You look neat! Love you in yellow, too ... there's a surprise color I'm not seeing much. You make it look fresh ... so cute, all the details. Bitchen' booties! Love um.
I haven't had a flannel shirt since forever. But I've recently aquired two, and that's probably plenty. Fun, though.

    1. Yeah, yellow is a weird color. I think this is the only yellow thing I have. Although I have had a desire for mustard colored shoes for some reason...

  12. A question: Do you wear a long sweeping coat over all these layers?

    1. ah ha! Inquiring minds what to know. Well. It depends on the weather, and my mood, and what I have on. I've sewn many pieces of outerwear, been given some, and have some stuff from the olden days. Some are cropped jackets, capes, swing coats, knee length, calf length and ankle length. They're reversible, tapestry, velvet, hooded, beaded and trimmed, multi-colored, and all black. Something for everything.

  13. Flannelstein, bwa-ha-ha! Love this!! This is no longer a flannel shirt, it's been subsumed in your creative maelstrom. Who would have thought to do all these things but you? Your shoes are the perfect foot notes. Now I'll be pulling stuff out of my closet all afternoon hoping to catch a thread of your energy in my own playtime.

  15. Love it! So happy to see the close up pics as the full length didn't show the detail of the fabrics. An artist in one medium is an artist in all mediums :)
