You Can't Keep a Tablecloth Dress Down...

and/or out for MeMadeMay'18, Day #8.

~ and oldie but a goodie ~

Made from 3 tablecloths:  1) for the bodice and front skirt, 2) for the back skirt and 3) for the sleeves.  I deviated (wildly?) from the free Tina Givens Kika dress pattern.  Basically, I added sleeves, bias binding for the neckline and box pleated a longer skirt.  Oh, and added inseam pockets.  Nothing major, really.

~ here's a view of all 3 cloths at once ~

You know, like those tourist stops where you can see 3 states from one point at the side of the road?  Well, there you go.

  3. What a lovely dress - and fun pattern combo. Your shoes are just great, again! To understand the challenge: Do you have to make the pieces you wear from day to day, or can you wear something, that you've made earlier?

    1. Sorry, I haven't really explained it. You can arrange the challenge however it suits you best. I committed to wearing whatever I've made everyday in May. And since I've got so many ebay shoes, I've thrown in wearing a different pair of shoes each day too. (But that doesn't really count as MMM.) You can get the full scoop if you click on the MMMade badge at the bottom on my side bar.

  4. Your tablecloth dresses have inspired me. TG Kika with sleeves! I used Christmas tablecloths to make a couple xmas vests because of your Marcy Tilton dresses. I'm not worthy of your designs.

    1. Now there's an idea. X-mas vest from x-mas tablecloths! But, of course.
"My designs" simply come from lack of fabric. When one tablecloth ends another has to take its place. And I don't care for sleeveless, so sleeves go on.

  5. You obviously have a marvelous tablecloth collection, as I never see any as nice as those. One day, I hope to be brave enough to try to make a very simple version of one of these. They are the perfect summer dress!

    1. So many of them were given to me. You don't have to be brave to make one, Shelley. And this is a very simple, free pattern you can download. You go girl.

  6. Hi, I’m new to sewing and have a question about the Kika dress. I’ve cut out the pattern pieces but I don’t know how wide to cut the skirt pieces. I’m going for the ‘above knee’ option so have allowed 15” in length, but my fabric is 66” wide and this seems way too much even with 5 pleats. Please can you help?

    1. Hi Denise, Congrats to you on starting sewing! If I recall, the Kika pattern just has one pleat...but I used as many as the tablecloth I was using would allow. And I had to use 2 cloths to complete the skirt. One for the front and one for the back.

Sounds like you have enough fabric so you don't have to worry about running out. If you're pleating (or gathering) the skirt, you want enough fabric to go around your hips at least twice, I'd say. It can certainly be more than that, but definitely not less. 66" doesn't sound too wide at all. You can try a mock up, pleating around the circumference with pins, to see how it might look with a belt or something around your waist. Although the dress is worn fairly loose. Also, I just randomly did my pleats, rather than measuring them exactly 2" apart or whatever. Have fun with it. Hope this helps.

  7. Hi Pao
Thank you so much for your reply. I will do a mock up as you suggest and hopefully this will give me a better idea of how it will look.
    Kind regards
