"Mais oui, bien sûr."
an impressionist painting...? |
Made from old linen tablecloths given to me by a friend. This dress has three of them. The pink top with border is one, the front floral panel is another, and the skirt portion with flowers and aqua border is the third. And a very simply pattern to sew from Marcy Tilton.
Check out those biiiigggg pockets! |
Can't you just see me going to Market to pick up a baguette, les fleurs, a cafe s'il vous plait, etc.?
c'est fini |
I liked this so much (to make and to wear),
I'm going to make another straight away.
The tablecloths were well loved. Many had tiny holes and spots. I had to use nearly the whole cloth for the dress (no selectively placing pattern pieces). So I mended or embroidered the areas that needed attention.
Sometimes overtly... |
and sometimes more covertly. |

Meanwhile, I'll be with the Visibles at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style. And Mis Papelicios' Share-in-Style: Pink and Bella's Secondhand First Share and Jane of Flight-Platform Living's Shiny T Tuesday. You really must check out all the fabo parties.
Oh, I adore this! What a thing of beauty! I'm having a sewing crisis at the moment but that dress is enough to make me fire up the sewing machine and start again. xxx
ReplyDeleteOh, oh, after you just worked on that groovy monkey dress! Really, just think if you went after 70s tablecloths!!!
DeleteGreat dress!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it, Cynthia. I was just looking at all your references to mending on Art for Housewives. Thanks for all the inspiration you provide!
DeleteLove, love this dress. I used to collect 40's tablecloths and adore the prints. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday. xox
ReplyDeleteIt was great to show it off at your place, Patti. Thanks for the visibility.
DeleteI am inspired by this dress in so many ways! I have several table clothes I have been collecting, just waiting for a transformation. They remind me of my happy childhood and of my Grandmother. I am excited to get working on a something with them. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty happy in a fairy tale kind of way, aren't they? I'd love to see what you do with your collection, Betty.
DeleteBrilliant! I love the silhouette and the mix of patterns. I have a collection of vintage tablecloths, and if I had your talent and skill, I would have a creation of my own. Instead, I will admire yours.
ReplyDeleteI imagine your collection is magnificent, Judith. And that you use them as tablecloths too. With exquisite china and table settings, not to mention amazing ensembles worthy of accompanying them for tea.
DeleteHoly Cow, that's a cool dress!! Love the pattern mixing and the shape (and of course, big pockets make everything better) - nice work.
ReplyDeleteI agree, pockets are good, the bigger the better. The only thing that's maybe more comfortable than wearing old linen tablecloths are high-count cotton sheets. Now, there's a thought...
DeleteSO fantastic! I'd love to have a dress just like this.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can!
DeleteI so enjoy your choice of patterns and your selection of fabrics! I mentioned you in my latest "Handmade" post as my inspiration for painted shoes ! Thanks so much. http://naturalmedley.blogspot.com.au/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mention, Jazzy. I do love being an inspirator.
DeleteHell, yes! I mean, Ah! Oui! So pretty and evocative. Love it with your little clogs, too. Yes. Make another, tout de suite! Those wonderful table cloth prints are so familar and lovely ... they deserve a dress for the rest of their lives. From tablecloth to couture. Not a bad evolution for a sweet, humble little cloth for the kitchen table!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm in the middle of tablecloth dress #2 with the last of my stash. Oh, whatever will I do without them...
DeleteThank you so much for stopping by at my page!
ReplyDeleteLove the dress, how talented are you?
My pleasure, Mrs. D. I couldn't miss a Traveling Yellow Skirt Sister, now could I?
DeleteTablecloths!!! Brilliant Pao! I'm already in the bed linens and curtains aisles of thrift stores, and now I will add tablecloths...exciting really, many tablecloths have some pretty lovely embroidery and design! Great pockets....super, great pockets!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to become a house dress woman with these. Another friend gave me 3 more tablecloths - enough for dress #3!
Deletethat dress is absolutely divine!! love it! and thank you so much for your beautiful comment over at my place, you made my day xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteI've really been inspired by your blog. The daily doll art work, your studio set-up, the visual planning/ organizing system you've worked out and much more. I'm even checking out the book you recommended, Making Ideas Happen.
Deleteoh just seen you have linked this beautiful outfit to shiny t! I am so thrilled, thank you for joining in xxxxx
ReplyDeleteOh, I think our comments just missed each other. Thanks for offering the link. That's how I found out about the latest yellow skirt visitation before the official announcement. And found the latest, new sew-ers, Curtise and Desiree.
DeleteSuper beautiful. I could imagine wearing something like that all summer.
ReplyDeleteHey Megan, me too, I'm on a roll.
DeletePure art and fantasy, dear Pao.
ReplyDeleteThank you soooooooooooooo much for being part of Share-in-Style.
Love and sunshine ALWAYS
I do think this dress would be just the thing for tea with Alice in Wonderland...And thank you for Share-in-Style, Sacramento. Cheers.
DeleteOne: I have that tablecloth. Two: my favorite designer (a local Sacramento gal who designed a line called Butt Ugly) specialized in tablecloth dresses and tops. I was lucky to own a couple, and your dress is one I would love to wear! Great re-use. You are genius! Thanks for linking this up!
ReplyDeleteNo way, you have this tablecloth - which one, it's made from 3? And here I thought it was a unique dress. I shall have to look up Butt Ugly and see what she has done. I'm sure they are anything but ugly. heehee.
DeletePao, what a great dress. I have sewn two of dresses with this pattern but never thought to challenge it with such fabric. When I finally get all the moving boxes unpacked, I am exploring this option!
ReplyDeleteI know the pattern shows knit dresses, but I went with woven. I'd love to see what you made. I hope you have them on your blog cuz I'm coming right over!
