Oh Yin, But No Yang Dress*

*sung with a Bob Marley kinda sway

~ so what's with this dress? ~

~ view of the yin ~
~ and view of the yang ~

But I found out afterward that the pattern has an error.  It only has pattern pieces for one side!!  A yin but no yang.  The first time I thought I just made a mistake and remade yang again in the print linen.  But no, there actually wasn't a yang, just two yins.   I recut the necklines to be the same on both pieces, so they could be worn together.  One side is supposed to be longer in length than the other...

~ from the Sewing Workshop Pattern, Yin Yang Dress ~

eh.  It started off with two solids, the wine and a black linen.  The black and wine together looked so somber, like I was a penitent.  I couldn't bare to wear it.  I'm looking for a good match for it.  And I don't even like the dress that much.  The concept is good.  Maybe if I hot-washed and dried it.  It looks so big, even for my likes.

~ le vintage jewel ~

~ and of course, les sox et shoes ~

Nevertheless, I'm showing up for Patti's and the Visibles at Not Dead Yet Style, Catherine's I Will Wear What I Like, and Cherie's Shoe and Tell when they all go live.  See you there!

  1. Those crazy nut pattern makers. Just like the recipe writers who don't test their recipes. Cray! I would most likely have a meltdown if this happened to me but not Ms Pao. This is very pretty. It doesn't look big at all. Just right, actually. I hope you're feeling better. XXOO

    1. I know, I'm beginning to think it's a conspiracy. I'd have the meltdown if I couldn't get it to work. I just can't stand to waste fabric...or to lose at sewing!

This was made earlier. I'm still hurtin'.

  2. This is like a mood dress - you flash whichever side you're feeling to the human you happen to be with at the time. Spin and you'll really confuse them. I LOVE this. Calm, wild. Long, short. The vintage jewel (heh) and the foot gear are divine as usual. I hope you're feeling better too.

    1. I dunno, the more I see it, the more I'm not liking it. Maybe it's just my mood.

  3. What a cool dress! Sometimes mistakes end up better than the original. Looove your socks.

  4. Love the wine colour and the long/short thing is lovely. Maybe you just need to get used to it?
As ever, the socks and shoes are gorgeous.

  5. I think it's a really interesting dress! Maybe a bit too much fabric bunching under the arms though? That might be why it feels too vuluminous. Can you raise the underarms and remove some bulk there? Love the footwear as always!

  6. I like it! even though it came from two yins and no yang. I do enjoy seeing two sides of you, and the jewel is divine. xox

    1. I did the best I could with dressing it up, but I think it needs to go on the surgery block. We'll see.

  7. That is the wonderful thing about sewing, the unsewing. I think I am more about altering than sewing these days; fresh yardage is not as much fun as surgical work. I bought a couple of custom seam rippers with interchangable (and very sharp and pointy) japanese ripper parts. A true pleasure to work with. Bigger handles easier to manuever.

I was about to say that must be an Ericson pattern; I am sure she is a wonderful person but I have emitted more profanity over her work. And as a pattern maker, I understand how it happens ALL TOO WELL.

    1. Looking at myself in it, it looks like prison garb gone wrong.

  8. I like the long-and-longer hem, and the pockets but I know how it is when you just are loving something, but can't really pinpoint exactly why. Perhaps you can do some re-shaping?

    1. That's what I'm thinking. For now, it goes in time-out.

  9. You've done an amazing job - a pattern of one half, could have gone either way, but you nailed it like a pro. Love it! xxx

    1. Maybe it should be 1/2 dress 1/2 pants...

  10. i too like the idea of that dress - i´ll go to copy it with my own, more fitting dress block. minus the huge pocket - i fear i get caught on them permanently on furniture or bushes ;-)
and wear it with a belt - because wind!
    love your dress clip!
