An Accidental Ensemble

You know how that goes...you're going for one piece and...next thing you know, you've got a totally different combination.

~ the wardrobe works in mysterious ways ~

Yes, I made everything.  Well, not the shoes, but you knew that.  Ok, nor the sunnies.

~ this hat brim is so darn big I need a hand(le) to hold it up ~

I mean check it out!
~ yow-sir ~

I made it out of my old, old, very old, like size 8 (??!!) jeans using an out-of-print Vogue hat pattern 8928, view A from 1994.   I lined it with a big scrap of linen left over from a wrap-around dress.  There's super stiff buckram in between for the brim.  And it still flops.  Of course, the humidity has been outrageous for weeks on end with so-called intermittent thunderstorms every day and night.

~ I'm not wearing any new makes, just newly layered together ~

They are both from Tina Givens patterns.  The top layer is the Tessa Slip made in stretch mesh worn over the Poppy Slip (with sleeves added) made from a medium-weight linen tablecloth.

~ back view carrying that big ole hat ~

When I "accidentally" put them on together, I really liked the way the shapes related to each other, not to mention the colors, prints, and weights.   Otherwise, I never wore the Poppy Slip/Dress on it's own because it was just too much of itself, you know?  Tessa kind of cools it down, or lightens it up.  Something like that.

~ and on my feet are a pair of ebay Crocs in pale pink with camo trees ~

And that's the way it was, girls.

This time I'm early so I'll be joining Patti and the Visibles at Not Dead Yet Style, Catherine at I Will Wear What I Like and Cherie's Shoe and Tell  when they all go live.  See you all there!

Oh.  I made a hat and I have it on...so...I'm linking up with the Hat Attack queen, Judith of the Style Crone, of course.  Come on over.

  2. OH, I love this! So accidentally brilliant!!! You create what you love and I think that's why you are able to create so many outfits from your separates. They make you happy and they just go together!

I'm not a Crocs fan, but those shoes are darling! So super cute!

    1. My one and only pair of Crocs. But they were so cute (and cheap!), what could I do. Plus, they're really comfy. Like bouncy even.

  3. It's a cross between a hat and an umbrella. I love the side view shot, very arty!
Pink and green are always winners in my book.
Can you walk in that ruched hem?

    1. The hem is just drawstrings on either side, so they're adjustable. But it's pretty wide as is, so I can stride as long as I want and get into cars, etc.

  4. When you don't spend too much time of construction your outfit, you usually end up with the best look, like yours here. Love the layering and mix of prints.

  6. That is not a hat; that is an airport landing strips for wonky aircraft. LOVE it! And I love the combo you've put together. It's so nice when we find how items we love play together.

I have never seen Crocs look good until now. Stay cool!!

    1. I figured if I'm making a hat, then I'm making a HAT. We'll see if I ever wear it...

  7. Of course, now have new obsession in hat patterns (there's a Vogue bridal somewhere that uses that hat). Damn you! But also bless you because I have a couple of yards of wonky fun mesh that's too itchy for tights but would be a bucket of fun as a layering tunic.

    1. uh-oh, there's no end in sight with hats in your radar. In this case, the hat is decidedly wearing me.
Yeah, go mesh it up, girl.

  9. There was a lot of fabric to be wasted otherwise, plus I didn't want it to look too serious. It was a big enough statement as is.

    1. I thought of you and how "at one" you are with any hat you choose to wear, Judith. I think it'll be awhile before that simpatico happens with mine...

  11. I'm thinking that you're even creative in your sleep! I love everything that you do and it's no different with this creation. Oh and the hat however unpractical it is, is still the cherry on the top!

    1. That's some compliment coming from you, Michelle! You're so creative, I don't think you ever have time to sleep!

  12. Love the layering of those florals!! I can see how the over piece would temper the dress. Humidity, right?!!!! I was gone for two weeks and immediately starting dripping when I stepped off the airplane coming home. Ugh. Lovely to sit in the AC and look at your blog, however. Trust all's well. xoxoxo

    1. Lovely to hear from you again, my friend. Fancy that in August, which is usually unbearable, it's been in the 60s and 70s. What's with that? Hope all's well with you too.

    2. Doing okay, although not stellar. Meh! My sewing space is still not together so I'm uninspired, although I keep trying!! Summer is hateful in my book, making me lethargic and cranky. Wanting to get rid of everything I own and start over. Sounds like I need a Project M commitment here, however. That'll keep me busy, at least once my space has been reclaimed. wahwahwah...!!! :-) Love you.

    3. I had to have an intervention with my sewing room, it was so bad. Now I seem to be in a mending, altering, finishing up phase. We'll see.

Here's to keeping cool, Jean. Just add a/c, iced drinks and less clothes. You know, like starting over...

  13. That is an epic hat! I like your floral upon floral layering, and the pretty shoes. I'm not a fan of crocs but those are actually quite attractive (and comfortable, I'm assuming?)
