I Made Something Really Cool!

~ or so I think ~

~ and I totally match the backyard too ~

I saw this dress on pinterest from the Santa Fe Dry Goods Store (it's no longer there) and wanted to make something similar.

So I looked through my pattern stash for a straight up and down type dress to make it with.  I found the Sewing Workshop Collection's Veranda Dress which had a few more interesting details to it.

I made several changes to the pattern:
  • used a double fused knit I had because I liked the print (pattern called for linen)
  • shorten the length by 6"?!  (I am 5'5", so...)
  • lowered the arm holes by 2-3 inches so I could wear it as a jumper
  • cut the back neckline the same as the front because I wanted to be able to wear it with front as back or vice versa.
  • made it button all the way down (rather than just to waistline)
  • raised the pocket height by 5-6" and moved them to center side (again so I could wear the dress either front or back ways
  • added straps attached at shoulders hanging down to mid arm, then attached a 2" buckle to it.  Another strap attached to the buckle to wrap around the arm allowing the leftover strap to hang down freely.

~ see? ~

I'm wearing the "back" in front now.  I could also wear it as a coat, vest thingy, opened.

~ and the panel that goes down the back (in this case) ~

~ and loverly shoes from ebay, bay-bee ~

~ A classic, don't you think? ~

I'll soon be at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style, then Catherine's I Will Wear What I Like and finally Cherie's Shoe and Tell when they all go live.  Hope to see you all there!

ooo, ooo, I forgot to mention, I'm wearing my 20 minute start-to-finish stretch mesh dress underneath.  I posted about it here.

    1. Hey Elizabeth! I know, I want to make them again. But really how many strapped sleeve things can one have? hmmmm.

  3. Aw man! I saw a similar fabric at Pacific Fabrics and dawdled on the thought, and it's gone gone goneski. That's what it wanted to be!
I wonder how many times I have pulled the Veranda pattern out, considered it, and put it back in the files. I am stealing this idea from you wholesale, and will give full props. I may go with a leather bondage kinda strap system (bondage librarian look?) and of course, I can't use that fabric.
Thank you from the bottom of my dark little heart

    1. The fabric was cheap from https://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/
but of course it's gone now. Yeah, I really never gave the Veranda a second glance until now. There was no problem making it. My changes were because I wanted something different out of it. Except maybe for the extra long length of it. I love the strapped in sleeves. Go for it. They're as easy as pie - no, easier.

  4. Pie is only easy if you use a pre-made pie shell! (I’m crap at pastry.) I totally adore that fabric! And the straps and buckles are very innovative. I’d say you made that inspirational photo about 10 times better!

    1. Yes, that's why I had to amend my pie comparison.
The original pix is a bit more penitent looking, I agree.

    1. I know, I keep finding more and more things to wear under it. hehe. Those were pretty straight-forward pattern changes though - nothing tricky.

    1. Working with what you already have can do that. If I went out and bought things purposely, it wouldn't look half as interesting, I'm sure.

  7. Hello! I am truly obsessed with your style and have recently delved into to the world of sewing my own clothes. How can I get more information on How you crated the tablecloth house dresses?? Is there any other way I can follow you?

    1. Hi Hallie, I simply used the Marcie Tilton, Vogue 8813 pattern with assorted old tablecloths. You could look at posts when I was making each one (indexed as "tablecloth dress"). Other than the blog, I'm on Pinterest. Happy Sewing!

  8. Good morning! I found the pattern and plan to order it. Did you just increase the sleeve length or use the longer sleeve pattern? I cannot wait to have one of these of my own! I will go and find you on pintrest too! You are just brilliant.

    1. As a matter of fact, I did lengthen the sleeve a bit and I raised the waistline (in the back) some. I had forgotten about that - it's been awhile since I made any. But those alterations were just for personal preference. Nothing's wrong with the pattern, per se. Oh, it does run very large though, so make a much smaller size then you would think. Do a test run perhaps.

  10. Hi Valerie, I see I have you bouncing around the blog. This really was a rather straight forward hacking job. Mostly adding the arm strappings.
