Sage and Decay...

toward the end of February.

~ Welcome to my garden ~

~ I'm wearing a Tina Givens Olivia tunic pattern that strayed...  ~

when I made it way too small, like baby-doll small.  I had to cut it in half, straight up the center front and center back, to make room for some other possibilities.   I like how it turned out though.

Using what fabric scraps I had left, I did things I wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

~ like adding a 12" wide strip of fabric down the back ~

with a large center box pleat at the neckline.

Since I had cut out all the original pattern pieces at the start, I had the minimum of leftovers to play with.

~ this is what I come up with for the front ~

I only had one piece 10" wide that was 3/4 of the length of the front part of the tunic.  And 2 smaller pieces of that width that tapered off into odd shaped triangles.  I used those for the upper part and then let them wrap around the neckline and shoulders however they may.  voila.  You can see the back of the "collar" in the back view.  Pretty cool, huh?

~ the side view gathers and cuts are from the original pattern ~

~ as is that big ole pocket ~

I did add the draw string to tighten it up a bit, and the sleeve cuffs. What looks like faded flannel, is actually a very light-weight knit.

That bit of black ruffle you can see peaking out is from an organza camisole I made ages ago.

The silk dupioni harem pants are a deviation from Sandra Betzina's Vogue 1355 that you can see me wearing here.

And finally, the grand finale
~  my Trippens from ebay ~

I'm running on over to Patti's and the Visibles at Not Dead Yet Style before it's too late.  Then Catherine's I Will Wear What I Like and Cherie's Shoe and Tell.  Hope to see you all there!

  1. Creative is too small a word for what you do with fabric, Pao. Love the back of this dress, with the smart pleat. And the organza camisole is brilliant; I'm off to ebay to look for one. Thanks for linking up, here's to hoping for a few garden blooms soon xox

    1. Thanks for the Visibles, Patti. That garden only produces sticks and mud, by the way.

  2. Your inventiveness just makes me laugh with delight! I like the riff on a plaid shirt contrasted with the peep of organza. Tell me more about your decision to make pants out of silk dupioni. Is it comfortable and how does it hold up to wear and tear?
And of course, all together a head to toe great outfit!

    1. I got the silk "as is" with an inconspicuous flaw, threw it in the wash and luved how it came out. Very soft and flowy. It's fine wearing with no tearing. And cold water washing and line drying which is how I handle all my clothes.

    1. Oh thanks, Coco. I forgot to mention, this is what I wore to workout, minus the shoes.

  4. I was about to start searching for the pattern you used, and instead, I would respectfully like to apply for the "Camp Pao's Brain" residency, where lucky campers get to hang and work in your head for a week. And having typed that, I have just creeped myself out totally. So staying on the outside of your skull, I thank you for the virtual workshop. And line dry cuts resolves unnecessary wrinkles.
Maybe I line dry me? Nah. I likes em.

    1. Anytime you want to meet up for Camp Sew-Amuck, just let me know. Or maybe we can do it as penpals. Remember those?

  5. Splendid outfit! I love it all. I followed your link to the earlier wearing of these trousers and must say I love the matching top as well. Your description does make sewing a top sound very simple and tempting. Thanks as always for all the inspiration.

    1. ooo, ooo, you've left an instagram address, Radostin. Or should I say, jessiejessyg? I'll have to visit. Although I don't know a thing about instagram...how hard can it be, after all, I do know how to sew, right?

    1. I do believe I've been wearing some of your "down to earth" colors, Louisa.

  7. I am fascinated, and oh-so-impressed by all the farking and re-jigging you do with patterns and fabric. I can think of all kinds of things I would wear that organza camisole over. Perhaps one day I will be brave enough to try making one of those.

    1. Interesting, I've only ever thought of wearing it under things and maybe letting it peek through.
There's nothing brave about making it, Shelley. Just playing and seeing what happens.
