Oh, Just Some Silly Summer Thing

~ Whatever can I say? ~

How about:  it's sub-tropic weather again.  You know, 90+ degrees, humid as all get-out, with intermittent crazy showers.    So I wanted to make a Hot Dress.

~ Yep, and this is it ~

Something that slips on and doesn't stick to you.  Lightweight and oh, so soft.  And still protects me from the sun.

This is one of the homeliest dress I've every made/ worn.  I think it's basically like a housedress, if you can remember those.  I even added hot pink lace to jazz it up a bit.  The pattern is Simplicity 8332 and started off as View A, but looked ridiculous and turned into View B along the way.  Sort of.

~ Yeah, well, I'd like to see what you come up with...~

I raised the neckline, lengthened the sleeves and the hemline.  I did not gather the skirt to the bodice, but put two very small tucks in both the front and back.  No lace at the hem because I used it to cover up the seamline where I added length to the original short cut skirt.  I also made one size larger than I needed, because that was the smallest available with the pattern I had.

And that's a wrap.  Speaking of which.  I tied a piece of fabric around for an obi-like look in the first photo trying to make something happen.  But suffice it to say, I don't think I'd actually wear it like that out and about.

~ crocs from ebay ~

And now I'm off to Patti's Not Dead Yet Style and then Catherine's I Will Wear What I Like when she goes live.  See you there.  Oh, and I forgot all about Spy Girl's Summertime link-up.  So off I go.

  1. Oh I love it with the obi! And it's a great dress for steamy weather. You look like you're having fun wearing it too, and that's the main goal. xox

    1. Yes, Fun With Clothes! Where would we be without it?! The obi may be too much fun, however...

  2. I say bring back the house dress! Much better than yoga pants and a t-shirt for lounging about. Especially if they're fun dresses like this. And I'm all about that obi life, man!

    1. I agree, Rosa. House dresses are us! With or without your obi, as the case may be...

  3. Great dress for your steamy weather. i quite like it with the Obi too. A loose dress is always so comfy in the heat.

    1. Well, Jill James, then I simply must don the obi and go forth. At least once. I'm sure no one would give a second glance or care for that matter.

  4. Yes, that is a consideration. Although at some point it is just HOT no matter what you do. Miraculously, we've had several cooler days as we enter into August!? Like 70s.

  5. I find myself leaning toward wearing dresses in hot weather as well. It's been in the 90's here in central Massachusetts, too, and I've been running through the pure cotton and linen ones pretty quickly.

    1. Dresses are the best regardless, I think. I agree, emmy jay, that in summer it's practically mandatory.

  6. another vote for the obi! i love how it looks with it, even though i know it's probably much cooler without it in the dog days of summer. the obi just really pulls it together: effortless chic! xoxo

    1. Hi darling dearie. Well, obi it is then. Maybe I'll have to make some more on purpose.

  7. I just received a dress I ordered and the pattern is *very* similar to this. Hmm, makes me think I should consider Pinning this one just in case. I like your "fireworks" fabric with or without the obi.

    1. Hi KimMalk, that's exactly what this fabric is called, "fireworks."
So we're twins, are we? I'll have to see you in your new dress now for sure. Obi on, obi off.

  8. Haha. I have a big pile of half finished or not yet started hot dresses (aka tunics). In my vast experimentation in the 90F+ "but it's a dry heat" workday environment, I have determined rayon and linen are the best. I wore the rayon tunic that I DID finish in the sultry heat wave streets (heat index of 106F) of NYC a couple of weeks ago -- so glad I made it a travel sewing project!
Thanks for linking! You're the life of the party!

  9. I like the obi effect. I like stuff with more prints. More please. But it's cooled down this evening. I suspect that if it were during the day tomorrow....I'd be melting just looking at it.
Such a weather wimp I am.

    1. I actually started to make a for real obi, more or less. But I like my make shift one better. As for more prints, I'm thinking I need to make up this dress again, with more parts of it in more prints. Don't you agree?

  10. We are having sub-tropic weather too, and I am all about a little house dress! I quite like the shape of yours; mine is floral print with a smocked bodice.

  12. Beautiful dress - it looks absolutely breezy and perfect for hot hot hot. Feminine too, which I associate with hot weather. Why? Why?! The obi belt is a very cool touch. I must remember that!

    1. Feminine hot weather, hmmm. I'm sure you've already done the obi belt - you're a natural for it. Not to mention you have Japanese influences at home...
