Outfitting for a Plague:

〰LOCK DOWN〰

And my first outing during the Plague...

~ thanks to Elaine for the photo

...with my True Love, no less.

Alas, I didn't have the recommended ensemble at my disposal.

*The protective suit of the Plague Doctor consisted of a light, waxed fabric overcoat, a mask with glass eye openings and a beak shaped nose, typically stuffed with herbs, straw, and spices. Plague doctors would also commonly carry a cane to examine and direct patients without the need to make direct contact with them.  Due to the primitive understanding of disease at the time, it was believed this suit would sufficiently protect the doctor from miasma while tending to patients.  (wikipedia)

  1. Apparently the beak was stuffed with herbs that would ward off the disease.

    1. That's what I've heard. Although I don't think many people would come close to anyone dressed like that. Nice to hear from you again, Vancouver Barbara!

  2. Definite outfit for our times. If you made the beak longer it could enforce physical distancing on its own. And if you put a bit of disinfectant and hydroxychloroquine in there you'd be sweet!
Great picture of you and your love.

    1. Hi tpotty! Yes, a longer beak would do it. Though the added chemicals would likely provide a swift end for all.

Yes, we've been married for 25 years already! Times flies.

  3. How nice to see you out and about, and with your sweetie! I'm all for the plague doctor style mask and a six foot stick right now.

    1. Hey Shelley, It was great to see you buzzing about in Mel's VOGOFF LOCKDOWN edition. Those were some bad looking bees, alright.

Believe it or not, this is the first (and only) time I've gone out in public since mid-March. It just doesn't feel safe enough the way things are going...However, I've been up to some interesting shelter-at-home stuff I'll blog about at some point.

  4. I am squinting very hard at the lovely fabric; indeed, you are both looking fine.

There are several PDF patterns for a plaque doctor mask, an illustration worth looking for is Erica Henderson, on Twit and IG (ericafails) with her Toucan Sam Froot Loops variation on the theme.

    1. You can read/see more details about the jumpsuit on my post https://projectminima.blogspot.com/2019/08/jumping-back-to-first-one.html

Good to know about the plague doctor masks. I've also seen plague doctor dolls on deviant art. You can still see it on my pinterest blurb.
